CBD (Community Based Digesters) is a fresh service model for transforming food, beverage and agriculture waste into renewable fuel and organic fertilizer. We develop and deploy hyper-local hubs, starting around Seattle, WA, that challenge the notion of waste management centered on distributed pick-up and centralized processing.
We believe the entire process should be localized so that 61% of waste going to landfills can be utilized as a renewable resource. This massively reduces logistics and transportation costs, while providing much greater value than can be delivered once the resource has been transported. Thanks to our backers we are re-inventing the food cycle with our demo projects in and around Seattle, WA.
Let us tell you a story about biocycling – that is, how nutrients, energy, water and carbon can be perpetually recycled:
Why pay to get rid of food waste? CBD offers community based, lease-to-own solutions that turn this liability into an asset: additional revenue sources and the catalyst for local environmental impact. Instead of paying around $200 a ton to dispose of a waste to some faraway place, we are creating a $700 a ton resource that can be used locally. The environment wins, the community wins and businesses win.
Pictured above is Robert, a masterful local craft brewer with Fremont Brewing Company (FBC). As a part of the brewing process, he produces large quantities of bioresources like weak worts, trub and spent grains. FBC is a leader in sustainable business and currently sends much of their bioresource off site to other businesses. While distributing their craft beer, FBC wants to support clean fuels and new ways to decrease their energy and environmental impact.
This is Gino. He prizes fresh tomatoes to make a killer red sauce. Wanting a high-quality, local organic product, Gino decides to contract Seattle Urban Farm Co. to supply hot house tomatoes, year round. Every week Gino has to dispose of leftovers that cannot be donated. He doesn’t realize that it costs him $200 to get rid of his heavy organic waste.
This is Hilary, at Seattle Urban Farm Co. Hilary supplies local restaurants and markets with organic hot house tomatoes. She relies on organic fertilizer as the healthiest way to boost her production, and meet demand. While she finds value in the production of organic produce, she is also strongly affected by the expense.
Now comes CBD with a game-changing microdigester, CBD takes waste from Robert, Gino, Hilary and others and, through the process of biocycling, transforms their stuff into high-quality organic fertilizer at a much lower price or for FREE if it is on-site.
Robert, Gino and Hilary are all happy to have improved their process and reduced costs, but that’s not quite the end of our story. The biogas generated from the same process that transformed waste into resource can be harvested and used as natural gas for cooking, heating, vehicle fuel and for sustainable electricity generation.
Electric vehicles can plug in to take care of last mile logistics. From waste-to-wheels, off-grid!
Hilary’s story gets even better. If her greenhouse is connected with the microdigester, the heat and carbon dioxide generated by the process will help extend their growing season. Because Hilary can continue to produce into the winter months, she can now support Gino by supplying tomatoes for his killer red sauce during the wintertime!
At its core, CBD evolves the linear food and beverage supply chains into the 21st century by tightly closing the loops that accumulate local value for the community. The virtuous supply loop goes from farm to fork to farm, in the form of biofuel and biofertilizer. With our model, every bit of our bioresources are recycled and utilized locally. This includes all the nutrients, energy, water and carbon locked up in food waste. In addition to a waste solution, the process mitigates GHGs and lowers air and water pollution, all while improving soil fertility for farmers and investing in regenerative living communities. Excited? So are we!
